Effortless

I was telling Angus about my friend Nat this morning, on our way to catch up with her and her delightful family. And how we met for the first time when I was about his age. Coming up to thirty years ago. Thirty. years. How does that happen? I could describe our friendship as a great many things, but the one I feel sums it up the best is effortless. Doesn't sound particularly sentimental or loving. But if it's one thing I have learnt about friendships, it is that those effortless ones are worth more than gold. The kind that picks up where we left off, respects and supports, understands and endures... and doesn't change, even when we do. I love watching our children grow and play together, the years seem to be flying by and I know that before we know it, another thirty years will have passed. I hope they're able to experience a lifetime of incredible moments with one another too.

  1. There is something so special about those friendships, people who've known you for a life time. The children look like they're having a wonderful time!

  2. Oh yes, you have summed it up perfectly Julie: effortless. I have a few gorgeous friends like this, they just get me, and we can always pick up where we left off. So special. The beach looks gorgeous too.

  4. I know what you mean, it's great to be so comfortable in a relationship that neither person is trying hard to impress or sometimes to undermine the other.

  6. They truly are the best friendships. I have really noticed this as we have moved around a bit over the last 13 years so I cherish those "effortless" friendships immensely where it makes absolutely no difference that we may not have physically seen each other for a while. That is so gorgeous that you caught up with Nat and her gang - I always find it intriguing finding out for the first time who knows who in the blogging world.

Have a great week! Mel x

  8. Those friendships are GOLD! The one's where it doesn't matter if you don't get a chance to speak that often, but when you do - you laugh, have fun and don't judge.

  13. That is actually the most beautiful definition of good friendship; effortless.

That is EXACTLY what friendship should be, & why a few of my efforts to maintain friendships has failed, with high maintenance demands from some friends.

    I really like this!

    ... really like it!

  15. I love it when our children are old enough that we can tell them all the stories of how we all met. Friendships like this are so special. I treasure them immensely and imagine how it will be when we are all old and grey. Because we will still be friends!

Lovely to catch up on your blog Julie! x

I know what you mean about 'effortless' - I would use that word to describe my relationship with my husband - wish it was the same word for teenage kids!!!
